- These are dilated, tortuous, superficial veins with incompetent valves; May either be primary (congenital, heredofamilial) or secondary (trauma, obstruction, DVT, or inflammation damages valves).
- Diagnosis is made by appearance, venous pressure changes during walking, Trendelenburg's test (retrograde filling test) , phlebography, Doppler flow meter, and plethysmography.
- Nursing Care involve: Skin care, Foot care and avoidance of prolonged standing, sitting, and crossing of legs.
- Complications after surgical treatment are hemorrhage, saphenous nerve damage, deep vein thrombosis, embolism or infection.
