Toxoplasmosis (protozoa) is transmitted through raw meat, handling litter of infected cats.
> Symptoms is flu-like; organisms passes placenta; can result to spontaneous abortion.
Other includes streptococcal infections, syphillis, gonorrhea, hepatitis; increased risk for spontaneous abortion and stillbirth.
Rubella is highly teratogenic in first trimester; cross placenta, women with titers should be vaccinated at least 2 months before becoming pregnant.
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is flu-like, mononucleosis like cross placenta through sexual or respiratory route; may either cross placenta or infect thru vaginal canal; no effective treatment known; may cause fetal death, retardation, heart defects, and deafness.
Herpes Simplex virus type 2 is an STD with painful blister on genitalia; crosses placenta and infect thru vaginal canal; pose increased fetal mortality; cesearean delivery is preferred with active lesions.
