THROMBOPHLEBITIS

  • Vascular occlusion of vessels of pelvis or lower extremities from infection, vascular stasis, and elevated coagulation.
  • Manifestations are abdominal and pelvic discomfort , tenderness, edema and pain in infected leg, fever and chills. Complication is pulmonary embolism.
  • Main nursing diagnosis: Altered tissue perfusion.
  • Nursing care involves thorough assessment and evaluation of circulation in legs (Homan's sign, temperature, tenderness, varices ); Bed rest if clot is present; warm compresses (no massage) ; Heparin therapy, anti embolic stockings.
