Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome/ Hyperpermeable Pulmonary Edema

Assessment:
  1. Increase Respiratory Rate
  2. Dyspnea
  3. Retractions
  4. Central cyanosis
  5. Dry cough
  6. Fine crackers
  7. Fever
  8. Alterations in level of consciousness
  9. Arterial blood gas
*Decrease PaO2
*Increase PaCO2

Nursing Interventions
  1. O2 therapy (increase flow 8-10 Lpm)
  2. Position: semi to high fowler’s
  3. CPT
  4. Increase fluid intake (balanced with diuretics due to Pulmonary Edema)
  5. Meticulous eye care (Pavulon inhibits blink reflex).
  6. If on PEEP (Positive End Expiratory Pressure)
  • Administer Morphine/ Ativan/ Diprivan, Pavulon to reduce resistance to PEEP.
  • Monitor patient
  • Pain Medication
  • Comfort
* Monitor: PEEP Ventilation, PAP. The purpose of PEEP is to open collapse alveoli and keep them open.
