- Seen at the end of the first week postpartum; the passage of thrombus originating in one of uterine or other pelvic vein into the lung, where it disrupts circulation of the blood.
- Manifestations: sudden, intense chest pain, dyspnea, hemoptysis, apprehension, shock symptoms. Complications is maternal death.
- Main nursing diagnosis: impaired gas exchange and pain.
- Interventions are Care for shock, O2 as needed, anticoagulants.
- Streptokinase may be given to dissolve clots.
