ANOREXIA NERVOSA

What is ANOREXIA NERVOSA?
  • An eating disorder characterized by purposeful behavior directed toward weight loss, preoccupation with body weight and food, intense fear of gaining weight, disturbance in body image and amenorrhea.
What is the MAIN SIGN?
  • Fear of gaining Weight
What are the common manifestations?
A - menorrhea
N - o organic factor accounts for weight loss
O - bviously thin but feels fat
R - efusal to maintain normal body weight
E - pigastric discomfort is common
X - symptoms (peculiar symptoms like hiding foods)
I - intense fear of gaining weight
A - lways thinking of foods

BULIMIA NERVOSA

What is BULIMIA NERVOSA?
  • An eating disorder characterized by episodic binging on food followed by purging in the form of vomiting.
What are the common manitestations:
B - inge eating
U - nder strict dieting or vigorous exercise
L - acks control over eating binges
I - nduced vomiting
M - inimum of 2 binge eating episode a week for 3 months.
I - ncrease/persistent concern of body size/shape
A - buse of diuretics and laxatives

What are the common NURSING DIAGNOSES related to eating disorders?
  1. Body image disturbance
  2. Self-esteem disturbance
  3. Ineffective individual coping
What are the PRINCIPLES OF NURSING CARE?
  • Monitor the patient's weight.
  • Encourage frequent oral hygiene
  • Stay with the patient during mealtime and within 2 hours after meals.
  • Encourage the patient to remain in a public place after meals.
  • Behavior modification therapy.
