What is ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER?

• It is a disorder characterized by persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactive and impulsive behavior that occurs before the age of 7.
• More common in boys.

What are the MAIN PROBLEMS?

1. Inattention
2. Hyperactivity
3. Impulsivity

What are the common etiological factors?

• Neurologic impairment
• Pre-natal trauma
• Early malnutrition
• Frontal lobe - hypoperfusion
• Use of drugs by the mother during pregnancy

What are the SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS?

1. Difficulty remaining sitted
2. Easily distracted by extraneous stimuli
3. Fidgeting
4. Interrupts/intrudes on others
5. Child exhibits hyperactivity.
6. Indulges in destructive behavior
7. Talks excessively

What is the PRIORITY NURSING DIAGNOSIS?

• Risk for injury

• Safety

What is the Drug of choice?

• Methylphenidate (Ritalin) A CNS stimulant, given to decrease hyperactivity.
